Hobie Cat's
Kick-Up Rudder System was designed with the catamaran sailor in mind. The patented
rudder cam set-up not only allows the sailor to raise the rudder manually- it
also automatically kicks up when coming in contact with a solid item (ex. shallow
ground, a mass of kelp, floating debris). The kick-up feature is the best way
to unlock the rudder from the "down" position when beaching.
How
to raise your rudder.
| | |
| 1.
Lifting up on the handle will unlock the cam that holds the handle in place. If
it is difficult to lift up, bumping upward on the bottom of the tiller handle
can help to disengage the cam. | 2.
Once the handle is unlocked, lift it a little higher and pull it toward you.
This will pull the rudder up and out of the water. | 3.
Continue pulling until the rudder will not go up any further. Rest the handle
on the lower casting to hold it in the "up" position. There is a lip
in the upper casting that holds it in position. If you are having problems locking
it in the "up" position, the rudder is probably not completely up. |
How
to lower the rudder? | | |
| 1.
To lower your rudder, lift up on the handle and push out toward the water. This
will force the rudder into the "down" position.
2.
To lock your rudder in the "down" position, simply push
down on the tiller handle to engage the locking cam. If you are having
difficulty locking the handle down, the rudder may not be completely
in the "down" position. |
| Important
Note When sailing, if you notice that the steering
feels heavy and non-responsive, the rudder is probably not in the locked-down
position. |
